Last night was the Season 2 premier of BBQ Pitmasters on TLC.
I for one really enjoyed Season 1 and the format that they used you had a chance to see the Pitmasters in their natural environment, and I did not get the feeling that it was scripted or fake.
When I first heard about the new format for Season 2 I was worried that it may rub some of us the wrong way (ya bad pun I know)
But I was willing to give it a shot. So I sat down in front of my TV to watch episode one of the new season. At first the show started out fine, where they introduced the teams and gave a bit of background on them, Not sure that I was too impressed with the set, but it is what it is.
I also liked that the first comp would be Pulled Pork and I liked that the Pitmasters were showing us how they prepare their meat for Smoking.
But then it got silly. Having one team kicked out because of Catfish!, and then someones chances being thrown out the window because of Coleslaw?
And the one team that actually made “Pulled Pork, finished 3rd!, 1st and 2nd place teams had pork slices at the end.
Mind you I had no problem with the winner of episode 1 I think he was the right choice. but parts of the show were too hokey for me.
Does anyone remember the show Junk Yard Wars? to me that was done correctly, this show? we will wait and see.
Also too the parts where the Pitmasters are talking to the camera looks way too scripted and trying to look like a bunch of the other reality shows out there, Not only that but the preview for episode 2 looks like more of the same script just different people reading it.
I hope I am wrong about that, as I really want the show to be a hit, Diva Q is having her episode air on September 2nd and of course I will be cheering for my fellow Canadian to do well, I have met Danielle and she is a wonderful gal.
When the new format was announced along with the new host Kevin Roberts, I was not too impressed when I saw a few clips of him in Morning news shows, but I was willing to give him chance. In the first episode he did not really stand out and really he need not, to me the show is more about the Pitmasters anyways.
The Judges? I find Myron an interesting guy and enjoy his southern style of talk and that he is a bit arrogant, I think the show needs that, Warren Sapp ? ya an outsider that loves to eat BBQ I see that, and the other judge is more of a critic I think rather than a judge.
Seeing some of the promo clips I am not sure that trying to shock us with Alligators or Snakes as BBQ dishes will work.
I world rather see the true BBQ skills of the Pitmasters rather than surprising them with secret ingredients and challenges.
Most of these contestants I am sure go through a lot of trial and error to get their recipes to be perfect, and I would rather see those than watching train wrecks because of last minute drama.
And the show has a sponsor Kingsford Charcoal that is supplying the trophy and I think some of the cash as well. but if anyone looks at the companies Facebook page they are really taking a hit on the the shows reviews.
Since I am a big BBQ fan and also a fan of the people involved I am not ready to write the show off, and I will watch the entire season. But I am worried that they may lose some fans along the way.
