On Monday I had to make an emergency service call on a computer out by Chatham, Ontario which is about 60 miles (100 kms) east of Detroit and 4 hours west of Oshawa.
At km marker 186 in London , Ontario I got off of Highway 401 and went North 3 km and on the left hand side is Smoke-n-Bones a fairly new, well known BBQ Smokehouse, that I had heard of but til that day had not been to.
On the left side of the above photo you can see the smoke stack, below is what makes the smoke.
What you see above is the back end of a 500 lb. capacity Southern Pride Smoker. When I took this picture there was a gentleman standing at the edge of the driveway waiting for a car to pullup, and he started a conversation with me and introduced him self as Len Leblanc the Executive Pit Boss of Smoke-n-Bones, I enjoyed meeting Len and I will be contacting him by email to ask a few questions that I have, so I will most likely be posting an interview in the near future.
How about we walk in the front door?
Right after I entered, I was directed to a comfortable booth and I found the inside of the restaurant to be nicely decorated with a bit of a Rustic Mexican kind of feel to it.
There was not much of a crowd there at the time which was 5pm on a Monday night so I think I was there just ahead of the rush.
(by the time I left an hour later more patrons had arrived)
My server brought over a menu, and asked what I wanted to drink and I saw on the table that they had a specialty line of soft drinks called Boylan Bottle Co. out of New Jersey which has been making Sparkling beverages since 1891 and they like Cheerwine in NC use Real Cane Sugar rather than Corn Syrup as a sweetener.
I decided to try the Orange Cream Soda as I have always been a fan of Creamcicle Ice cream bars.
After reading the menu that had so many amazing sounding items on it and taking into consideration that I had gum surgery just 3 days before and was under Dentist’s order to have soft foods for the nest 2 weeks, I went for the Pulled Pork Sandwich.
I would of loved to try some ribs but my teeth could not handle that.
While I was waiting for my Pulled Pork the server brought over a box that had 6 flavours of their own sauces and a bottle of Frank’s Red Hot , I really liked that the sauces are in a wooden Boylan’s tray and the sauce bottles had very interesting lids that even if they are upside down on the table they do not leak or make any mess.
According to the menu Smoke=n=Bones has been open since August 2010 so it is fairly new to the area.
London has a very large RibFest every year and many of the ribbers that do vending all over the Ontario market are based in the South-Western area of London.
It was not long before Mary arrived with my order, I was not that hungry since I had a late lunch around 2pm when I left Oshawa, otherwise I would of also tried some of there side dishes.
The Pulled Pork Sandwich came naked with a fairly small container of slaw and a lot of spicy Potato wedges. Having the meat without sauce is the right way to go especially since they have 6 great sauces to choose from that you can add as little or as much as your personal tastes would like.
I like my Pulled Pork with some slaw on top and sauced, so I tried the Granny’s Sauce which was a sweet sauce with a bit of twang to it that I quite liked, I ended up trying all 6 of the sauces by squirting a little where I was about to take a bite from.
All of the sauces were distinctively different so there is no doubt that they have a sauce that will appeal to pretty well anyone’s taste buds.
The Pulled Pork was moist with a nice smoked flavour and I like that they served it with a toasted bun which is what I do at home when I smoke my own Pork Shoulder.
The Potato Wedges were very filling and had a lot of seasoning coated on them , to me they had maybe too much seasoning on them but they were very tasty, If I were to visit again I would order another side (which they call Fixin’s) instead maybe The Mac & Cheese, Baked Beans, BBQ Chili or perhaps Corn on the Cob.
After my meal I asked my server if I could see the Smoker and she directed me over to one of the Proprietors that posed for this picture along side one of the cooks in front of Their 500 lb. capacity Southern Pride Smoker that burns Wood.
In the upcoming interview that I hope to have with Pit Boss Len Leblanc I will try to find out what kind of wood they smoke with.
I only get out to the London area maybe 2 or 3 times per year but I would be happy to stop in again and try more of their BBQ, It was an enjoyable experience.
I scanned the pages of the menu for you all to see which the server was nice enough to let me keep.
